FAQ

What readers want to know

Do you offer loans or arrange them?

We do neither. We publish explanations and tools so you can understand borrowing before you talk to a lender. Nothing here is an offer or a guarantee of approval.

How do I compare two loans fairly?

Line them up on the same amount and the same term, then compare the total repayable rather than the monthly figure alone. Note every fee and any charge for repaying early.

What is a representative example?

It is a worked illustration that a lender is often required to show, set out with a loan amount, a term and a cost. It exists so that the headline rate can be understood in pounds, euros or dollars, not just as a percentage.

Why might an application be declined?

Common reasons include gaps in the information provided, errors on a credit report, a high level of existing debt compared with income, or too many recent applications. Lenders do not always give a full explanation, but you can usually ask for the main reason.

Where do I go if I have a complaint about a lender?

Start with the lender's own complaints process, then take it to your national financial ombudsman or consumer-protection body if it is not resolved. Keep a record of your dates and messages.
